Art Institute of Chicago vs Adler Planetarium

Chicago CityPass gives you the choice between visiting the Chicago Art Institute or the Adler Planetarium. This is a review of what we chose.

If visiting Chicago with a CityPass seems right for your travel plans, buy one here
*Remember CityPass is valid for 9 days after the 1st use.

Believe it or not, we ended up going to both. However, you must choose which of these two CityPASS attractions you would rather do. Then if you want to do the other, you can get it at a discounted rate. Believe us when we say that hands down the Chicago Art Institute wins.

Art Institute of Chicago

Art Institute
Time: At least 2 hours, but your could spend a whole afternoon here…unless you are an art history person. Then the sky’s the limit.

Can’t miss exhibits: The impressionist exhibit is world famous. I’ll just come out and say it. Monet = genius.

Strangely enough the miniature rooms exhibit are really fun. The ticketing lady recommended them to us and we thought that sounded silly. We tried it anyway and saw what she was talking about.

The American Modernism section also houses some iconic paintings such as American Gothic – the one with the farmer with the pitchfork and his wife. Yeah that’s really there.

Tip: If you go 30 minutes before closing, they will let you in for free! Don’t waste your Chicago CityPASS here over the Art Institute of Chicago unless you are a huge astronomy buff.

We had just enough time to go through the history of telescope exhibit and see some unbelievable images of galaxies and nebulas.

Tip: Even if you don’t make it inside the Adler, it’s worth the stroll from the Shedd aquarium. The views of Chicago were amazing. And Chicagoans know this too, since there were 3 separate wedding parties all taking pictures with the cityscape in the background.
